Librarians
From what I have experienced in my high school and in public libraries, librarians have an extended amount of work. They not only sign in and check out books some are also in charge of doing check in and check outs and organizing the returned and misplaced books in the right shelf. Also, they need to set up accounts for new students who might need to sign out books or log into the computer lab. They're there to order new books and help find books and set up systems to find books easily. Librarians do all this and save a lot of valuable to students who only have brief amounts of time to complete long projects. Most importantly they are there to teach you how to use researching tools and answer any questions asked regarding their library. I think librarians already do as much work as they can but if they had a Ipod touch kind of device for students to check in and out books by themselves it would be cool and less work. In the future I picture libraries that have a mechanism where you have find the book and an automatic machine will bring it out of its shelf and brings it to you. If this does happen library structure will be tall with shelves hanging or suspending in the roof all over the place. I think this might only happen if people start being active and walking up to get a book from a shelf in the library is not their only exercise.

Nohemi,
ReplyDeleteWhile the duties you described are performed by some librarians, especially those in smaller libraries, we more often work with our users to educate them, assist them with their research questions, and ensure that they have the correct resources to do their research.
Many libraries do offer self-checkout. You should visit Denver Public Library. Not only do they do self-checkout but also self check-in with a conveyor belt instead of a regular book drop! Also, some libraries do have a high density storage system where books are retrieved by machines. Check our http://www.hermionish.com/2011/04/steelcase-library.html to read about the Steelcase Library at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.
There's some pretty cool stuff happening in libraries! Thankfully, we've moved beyond just stamping date due slips :)
